Any happiness, no matter how brief, seemed better than the long, simmering torture of waking up day after day, knowing I could never have him.

About This Quote

In the novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird," Harper Lee described a relationship as "long, simmering torture." In this quote, Lee is referring to the fact that the narrator's father's dementia becomes so severe that he gradually loses his ability to recognize his family. Of course, as a result of his illness, the narrator must deal with the difficult task of caring for an invalid father. In order for this to be possible, he must take on as many responsibilities as possible. In doing so, he finds himself unhappy and longing for the day when his father will no longer be in need of care. The sadness he feels over being unable to care for his father is only worsened by the knowledge that he can never have him back, because he has lost all memory of him.
